Blog - Publishing costs

How much does it cost to publish a book in 2026?

Ask ten authors and you will hear ten answers, from "it cost me nothing" to "I spent $10,000". Both can be true. Publishing a book is free at the door and expensive at the polish: Amazon KDP charges nothing to put your book on sale, so every dollar you spend goes on making the book good enough that strangers choose it. Here is where the money actually goes, line by line.

Editing: the biggest and most important cost

Editing is usually the largest single expense, and the one readers notice most when it is missing. Proofreading (final error check) commonly runs $0.01 to $0.03 per word, copyediting $0.02 to $0.04 per word, and developmental editing, which works on structure and story, $0.03 to $0.08 per word. On a 70,000-word novel, that means roughly $700 to $2,800 depending on the level you buy. Skipping editing entirely is the most common false economy in self-publishing: reviews punish errors, and a book lives or dies on its reviews.

Cover design: the second most important cost

Readers judge the cover in about two seconds, in a list of thumbnails. A professional ebook cover typically costs $50 to $500; a full print wrap (front, spine and back) costs more. Stock-based premade covers sit at the cheap end, custom illustrated covers at the top. What you are really buying is genre signalling: a cover that looks at home next to the bestsellers in your category.

Formatting: small cost, visible difference

Formatting turns your manuscript into a clean ebook and print interior. DIY tools are free to cheap, and professional formatting usually costs $50 to $250. Print formatting is the fiddly part: margins, page numbers, chapter openings and widows all need care, because a sloppy interior reads as amateur the moment a reader opens the preview.

ISBN, printing and platform fees

On KDP, the ISBN for ebooks is optional and Amazon provides free ISBNs for paperbacks, with limits on where you can use them. Buying your own ISBN costs $125 for one in the US (cheaper in bundles, and free in some countries such as Canada). Printing is not an upfront cost with print-on-demand: the printing cost is deducted from each sale, which is exactly what our KDP Royalty Calculator shows you. IngramSpark charges title setup fees that vary by format and promotion, so check their current schedule.

Marketing: the cost nobody budgets for

A launch budget of $100 to $500 for ads, review copies and promotions is realistic for a first book. It is not compulsory, but a book with no push at all usually sells to friends and family and then stops. Spread this money across the launch month rather than spending it all on day one.

So what is the honest total?

RouteTypical total
Bare minimum DIY (free tools, no editing)$0 to $100
Sensible indie route (editing, pro cover, formatting)$800 to $3,000
Full professional route (all levels of editing, custom cover, launch support)$3,000 to $8,000+

The sensible middle route is where most successful indie authors land. One last warning: never pay a company thousands for "publishing packages" that bundle an ISBN, a press release and promises of bookstore placement. That is vanity publishing, and the same money spent on editing and a real cover will do more for your book every time.
